When thinking of the Galápagos Islands, it’s easy to envision a paradise of unique wildlife and stunning marine landscapes. However, one crucial aspect that should not be overlooked is the spectacular volcanic activity that shapes this Ecuadorian archipelago. The Birth of a Volcanic Archipelago

The Galápagos Islands emerged from the ocean around 5 million years ago as a result of a series of volcanic eruptions. They sit atop the Galápagos hotspot, a region in the Earth’s mantle where magma rises forcefully through the oceanic crust. As the magma reaches the surface, it forms volcanoes, and over time, these volcanoes build islands.

On Isabela Island, Wolf Volcano is the tallest in Galápagos, standing over 1,700 meters above sea level. Its most recent eruption was in 2015, demonstrating that, although volcanic activity is relatively rare, Galápagos volcanoes remain active. Wolf features a classic conical shape and is renowned for its expansive caldera, offering a breathtaking view of recent volcanic activity.

Sierra Negra Volcano: A Colossus of Lava

Also, on Isabela, Sierra Negra Volcano is known for its gigantic caldera, one of the largest in the world. With a diameter of approximately 10 kilometers, the caldera of Sierra Negra was formed during a massive eruption about 290,000 years ago. Major eruptions occurred in 2005 and 2018, highlighting the volcano’s ongoing activity.

Cerro Azul Volcano: Fire and Ice

Located on Isabela Island as well, Cerro Azul Volcano is famous for its varied eruptive activity. Unlike other Galápagos volcanoes, Cerro Azul features a mix of effusive and explosive eruptions. The most recent significant eruption occurred in 2020, when an ash plume rose more than 5 kilometers above the crater. Additionally, Cerro Azul is surrounded by glaciers, a rarity in such a warm region.

Erosion and Evolution: Life After the Fire

Volcanic activity in Galápagos not only creates islands but also sculpts their landscapes. Lava flows and ash create fertile soils that support rich biodiversity. As islands age, erosion and lava decomposition lead to deeper soils, allowing plant colonization and, eventually, the arrival of animals.

This process of formation and degradation also plays a crucial role in species evolution.
