Once you arrive in Quito, you may consider the possibility of resting a bit to get yourself ready for the afternoon briefing.
After breakfast we will drive to the Imbabura province, stopping on the way for pictures. We will continue up to el Lechero Tree trail to start our hike down to Otavalo city, passing by Peguche waterfall (the hike takes roughly 2 hours). After we arrive in Otavalo, you will have plenty of time to visit the Indian market, lunch, and explore the town on your own. Your hotel accommodations for the night will be in the Otavalo area.
We will travel to the entrance of Cotacachi Cayapas Ecological Reserve, at 10,000 ft. At the Reserve´s entrance, we will begin our hike around Cuicocha Lake. This hike is approximately 8 miles, and takes anywhere from 3 to 5 hours. With some luck, we will see Condors flying near the cliffs during the walk. There is a nice place to stop during the hike and enjoy our box lunch. We will then continue to the end of the trail, where we will board our bus to Cotacachi, also known as The Leather Town, where you can peruse thousands of leather articles.
Today, we will travel from Otavalo to the Cotopaxi National Park, and, along the way, you will have the chance to admire the well-known Avenue of the Volcanoes – there are several sites for pictures. In the Park, we will visit the museum, so as to learn more about the hiking trails, and the flora and fauna endemic to the Andes. Once our hiking ends, we will venture to our hotel near Lasso Village.
This morning, we will take a beautiful drive to Baños city, where we will mount bikes and peddle to the Avenue of the Waterfalls. We will continue to Rio Verde village, where the most beautiful waterfall is located (Pailon Del Diablo); the water for this waterfall flows from the Llanganates National Park. We will then hike to the base of Pailon Del Diablo to admire the impressive water drop. We will take some time for lunch, and finally we will head back to Baños city for the night.
On this day you can choose between rafting in Pastaza River (class III) with some virtuous rapids, or you can spend your time on a fantastic adventure canyoning (rappelling through waterfalls). Later, you will have a free afternoon – for relaxing and exploring the town of Baños on your own.
Early in the morning we will visit Chimborazo Fauna Reserve, a magical place. Here, we will reflect on the beauties of the highest volcano in Ecuador, at 21,000 ft. This is also one of the few places in the country where we can see the famous Vicuña (endemic camel from the High Andes) which was reintroduced in the 70′s from Bolivia and Chile for the wool business. The wool of the Vicuña is highly prized in the international market. While in the park, we can climb to 16,000 feet to the second Base Camp. Here, we can lunch in a traditional restaurant known as Estrellas Del Chimborazo. In the afternoon we will continue toward Riobamba City, and after a panoramic tour in the old town we will arrive at our hotel for the night.
The main attraction today will be the Train ride from Alausi to Sibambe Station. It is one of the Engineering Marvels of the twentieth century. The entire ride is breathtaking, and you will definitely admire the beautiful scenery which demonstrates the ethnic and natural richness of the country. On the final section of tracks, you will experience what is known as the Devil’s Nose, where the actual shape of the mountain is similar to a nose. At the end of the train ride, we will continue our journey toward the pre-Inca Ruins called Ingapirca (Inca Wall). The Ingapirca is one of the few archaeological remains that we can visit, and it has been well preserved. Once we have toured the Ruins we will travel to the city of Santa Ana de los Rios de Cuenca. Here, we will spend the night.
On day 9, we will travel to Cajas National Park, where we will walk along the Inca trail until we reach La Luzpa Lake (approximately 4 hours from the park´s entrance). Once we get to the camping area, it is time to relax and read a good book or just admire the sunset while waiting for dinner to be prepared.
After breakfast, it is time to walk for 2 hours to the highway where our driver will be waiting for us to continue the journey down to the coastal area. In the afternoon, we will visit the most important sites of Guayaquil, such as Centenario Park, the Boulevard 9 de Octubre Iguanas Park, the Basilica, the Malecon Simon Bolivar, and finally Las Peñas Viewpoint, where you can admire the impressive city of Guayaquil.
On this day we will continue our journey to visit the Cerro Blanco Protected Forest, located one hour from Guayaquil city. After a walk in the forest, we will drive to Salinas, which has one of the most beautiful beaches in Ecuador. Once we arrive at the hotel, you will have free time to explore and enjoy on your own.
Today is a day of leisure – relax, go to the beach, or rest in the hammocks, while you enjoy the landscape and the wonderful atmosphere.
The morning of day 13, we will travel back to Guayaquil City, which is approximately 2 hours from Salinas Beach. You will then board your flight for your trip back to Quito.
Today ends your tour, and you will board your plane back to your hometown destination. Thank you for spending time with us, and we hope to see you again soon.
